Mayville Wintergrass to Feature Renowned Songwriter
Mayville, NY-The Mayville Bluegrass Festival Committee has announced the lineup for February 5th Mayville Wintergrass, a mid-winter “sister” to the annual Mayville Bluegrass Festival held here in June. Presented at the Chautauqua Suites Meeting and Expo Center, the event will feature offerings for both the traditional and more progressive acoustic music tastes.
Acclaimed songwriter and guitarist Chuck Pyle will be featured at the event, making a repeat visit to the area from his home in Colorado. Chuck Pyle has won high praise from both fans and peers alike throughout an inspired performance career of over 40 years. When reviewers first gave him the "Zen Cowboy" moniker, he decided to, as he says, "Always ride the horse in the direction it's going," and took the nickname to heart, shaving his head and blending his upbeat perspective with old-fashioned horse sense. He mixes infectiously hummable melodies with straight-from-the-saddle poetry, quoting bumper stickers, proverbs, world leaders and old cowboys. An excellent recording artist, he has just released his 10th CD, Higher Ground - Songs of Colorado. It includes three new songs and nine songs from earlier CDs. A favorite of Chautauqua County acoustic music fans, at the Mayville Folk and Bluegrass festivals, and at the Mayville Guitar Show.
What started as a routine experiment has turned into a revolutionary project, henceforth known as The Hickory Project. The band features hard–driving traditional and original acoustic music with the expert licks of National Mandolin Champion Anthony Hannigan. A globally acclaimed act, they have captivated audiences throughout Europe, both the main land and Celtic Isles, Australia and all through the US. They are also return visitors to the area, having performed at the Mayville Bluegrass Festival and at the first Wintergrass, with the legendary fiddler Vassar Clements.
Doug Yeomans is a Buffalo, NY guitarist and singer who is bringing his band, Mountain Run, to the festival for some hard-driving, flatpicking, high-lonesome flavor. A perennial guitar champion, Yeomans is known as the western NY guitar ‘go-to’ guy. He has toured nationally, most recently with the touring production of the Johnny Cash stage show, Ring of Fire.
Artists also scheduled to appear at the festival are The Bluegrass Disciples, Amanda Barton and Bill Ward, Wind River, and Old Dawg Bluegrass.
The show begins at 6 pm with festival seating and refreshments and food available. Tickets are $15 and available at the door or online at mayvilleevents.com. There are also tickets for sale at Trinity Guitars, 800 West Third Street, Jamestown NY, or at Chautauqua Suites Meeting and Expo Center in Mayville.
All proceeds will go toward keeping the June festival a quality, low-cost, family event. For more info, call 716.753.2800
